Introduction

Welcome to the CUI Product Spotlight on encapsulated ac-dc power supplies. Learn about the benefits of an encapsulated power supply design, target applications and CUI’s encapsulated ac-dc module family. Our designs are optimized to provide a very compact solution at each available power level.

Rugged Design

All of CUI’s PSK series are potted and packaged in an encapsulated case. Compared to a typical open frame design, these encapsulated models provide added protection in environments that may experience exposure to moisture, dust and dirt, or heavy shock and vibration. Additionally, these modules have been optimized to provide a very compact solution at each available power level.

Convenient Installation

The PSK-T series’ chassis mount packaging allows users to install the units in applications where a dedicated circuit board for the power system is not feasible or is cost prohibitive. Users are able to secure the PSK-T series to a chassis and connect the input and output cables via the module’s terminal block connectors. In addition to the PSK-T series, the DIN rail package of the PSK-DIN series provides users an option for easy installation in control cabinets, while the PSK-L series’ wire lead package offers designers another convenient mounting option.

All models in the PSK series come with built-in over current, over voltage, and short circuit protections. In the event of a fault in any of these areas, the converter's output will shut down, recovering automatically when the fault is removed.

Addressing Application Challenges


Some applications in North America, including equipment in the rapidly expanding LED lighting, sensing and smart building markets, run off of a 277 ac input voltage, requiring a specialized ac-dc power supply design. To address these applications, the 1 watt and 2 watt versions of the PSK family feature an extended input range of 85 to 305 Vac, making them well suited for use in not only general ITE, consumer, and industrial equipment, but in these emerging fields as well.

277 Vac Mains

  • Applications running off a 277 Vac input in North America require specialized ac-dc power supplies with an extended input range. These include:
    • Lighting
    • Sensing
    • Smart Building
  • The 1 W and 2 W series have been designed with an 85~305 Vac input range to address these rapidly growing markets.

Available Products

CUI’s encapsulated family of ac-dc power modules is available in compact board mount, chassis mount, DIN rail, and wire lead configurations. To address the rising emphasis on no-load, or “vampire” power draw in electronic equipment, the modules are designed to consume as little as 100 mW under no-load conditions. For applications that require a wide temperature range, including industrial and outdoor equipment, the PSK series offer an operating temperature range up to -40 to 85°C. Additional features include a standard isolation voltage up to 4000 Vac, very low ripple and noise, and IEC 62368-1 certifications for all models.
